HISTORIC REFERENCE OF THE MATER CHRISTI WOMEN'S GUILD

The Women’s Guild of Mater Christi Church is open to all women of all Parishes. Our common bond is our faith and our desire to serve God and his people. Our mission is to unite and to create opportunities for Christian women to enrich themselves and the people of God by their active involvement in charitable, spiritual, educational and social works in our parish and our community. We network with the North Riverside community, the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, and other groups and organizations, including the Holy Name Society.

The Guild was established as the Tabernacle Guild in September 1951. Its primary purpose at the time was care and maintenance of the church altar and vigil lights, although it also engaged in spiritual and charitable works, and members helped out at the school. As times changed, so did the role of the Guild. Upkeep of the altar and vigil lights was reassigned, allowing the Guild to focus on its charitable, spiritual and social works. This also prompted its name change. The Women’s Guild has remained an active part of the parish continually since 1951, and boasts one of the highest memberships of all women’s guilds in the Chicago Archdiocese.

Monthly meetings were usually held on the first Wednesday of the month from September through May. Following an opening prayer, the president presided over the meeting which includes reports from officers, board members and committee heads. Thereafter refreshments were served and a wide variety of entertainment is provided for everyone’s enjoyment. Socializing and meeting new friends was also an important part of every meeting.

The Women’s Guild sponsored spiritual, social and fundraising events such as an annual retreat, fashion shows, a bake sale and raffle, and a Mission Dinner each December to benefit our group's charitable works. Our charitable functions had raised generous amounts of money and other donations to help worthwhile causes such as, Helping Hand, Catholic Charities, School Sisters of Notre Dame Sister House, Housing Forward, Respect Life, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Members of our Wake Committee met with parishioners who have lost loved ones to offer prayer and support. Our Baptismal representatives welcomed the newest members to our Parish by attending Baptism ceremonies and presenting meaningful gifts to the child and family.

Our Guild sponsored parish hospitality, May Crowning and the Parish’s annual Evening of Reflection, and it worked with a local shelter to aid those in our community who are less fortunate. Guild members and their families also worshiped together monthly at a Mass offered for the intentions of Guild members both deceased and living.
